Exhaled Breath

Breath analysis leverages advanced techniques to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath, providing real-time insights into an individual’s metabolic state. Because exhaled breath is naturally produced by the body, it can be collected non-invasively and as frequently as needed—making it an ideal medium for continuous and patient-friendly monitoring. Exhaled breath contains a wealth of metabolic information. Some metabolites—small molecules resulting from biochemical processes—are exhaled in volatile form, offering valuable indicators of an individual’s wellbeing and clinical status. This biochemical signature can support diagnosis and guide treatment decisions across a range of clinical applications. At DBI, we combine real-time, decentralized breath analysis of VOCs with proprietary machine learning solutions to advance precision medicine and contribute to better health outcomes.

Measurement Technology

Analyzing VOCs requires extremely high selectivity and sensitivity, as these compounds make up only around 0.1% of exhaled breath. To enable high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis, VOCs must first be ionized—charged—so they can be separated and detected by the mass spectrometer.

At DBI, we utilize a state-of-the-art analytical platform combining the Q Exactive Plus Orbitrap HRMS (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA), Super-SESI and Exhalion (Fossiliontech, Spain), and our proprietary DBI-BreathCollector (DBI, Switzerland). This integrated setup enables highly sensitive and selective detection of ionized breath molecules, delivering precise and reliable analytical results.
